Employee Spotlight – Mariah Acap, Controller for BMG Baltimore

Therefore, we are initiating our Employee Spotlight to help you get to know more about our talented employees and how their unique backgrounds and expertise help us stay a “cut above the rest.” Today, we are proud to introduce Mariah Acap, Controller for our Baltimore office. Read on to discover all about Mariah, her professional background, and what she enjoys most about working here at Bay Property Management Group.

Meet Mariah Acap, Controller

Mariah joined the Bay Property Management Group team as a Controller approximately four months ago. Before that, she got a degree in finance, worked in personal financial planning for five years, and thought she wanted to become a CFA. However, she realized she would rather manage the finances of a business instead. So, she moved to small business finance and operations position for five years before transitioning to her current role. Growing up in a small town, Mariah really appreciates the diversity in Baltimore City—especially when it comes to dinner options!

A Day in the Life of a Controller

Mariah oversees the continuously growing accounting department that services all locations of Bay Property Management Group.. They were a team of 11 when Mariah first started and now are a team of 19. The bulk of Mariah’s duties includes problem-solving, generating monthly financials, handling tax-related matters, streamlining workflows, implementing more efficient processing, and guiding the team through a myriad of daily tasks.

Each workday for Mariah is quite different based on what needs her attention. For example, it’s easy for her to spend the entire day on tax-related items during tax season. However, generally, she starts every day by checking in with the team. Then she goes on to dive into emails and priorities for the day. She typically has a few meetings and long-term projects that she also makes time for. Finally, Mariah adds:

“My daily schedule is ever-changing because I have a standard policy with my team that if I am needed, I will always prioritize supporting them.”

Why Mariah Loves Bay Property Management Group

According to Mariah, what sets Bay Property Management Group apart is that the leadership truly values input from employees. In most large companies, employees are treated more like a number. However, according to Mariah, “when employees feel heard and supported, they will outperform those who do not — thus, improving the company as a whole!”

Something that surprised Mariah about property management in Baltimore is the sheer volume of transactions. She says, “I think a lot of people do not understand how many transactions our team manages.”

Mariah’s best piece of advice for those considering this field or those in the profession already is: “The golden rule — Treat others as you would like to be treated.

Getting to Know Mariah Outside of the Office

  • When you’re not in the office, what do you like to do? – I enjoy hiking, exploring new cities, exercising, cooking, baking, traveling, trying foods I’ve never had before, interior design, and pretty much anything I can do with my husband and doxies.
  • Tell us something off your bucket list – I’d love to be in one of the yachts alongside the Monaco Grand Prix race so I could watch in person, but be away from the crowd!
  • If you could meet anyone, living or dead, who would you want to meet and why?I’d love to sit and chat for a while with my late grandmother- There are many things I wish I could’ve asked her.
  • What is the best book you have ever read?Claim Your Power by Mastin Kipp
  • If you could dis-invent one thing, what would it be?Nuclear weapons, hatred, or mosquitos… it’s a toss-up really.
  • What are three words to describe yourself?Caring, outgoing, and positive
