Approximately 85% of occupied homes are renter-occupied and about 15% are owner-occupied, based on U.S. Census estimates — far above the Baltimore City figure of roughly 52% renter-occupied. The Walters Art Museum spans more than seven thousand years of art across its collections and admits visitors free of charge. The George Peabody Library, with its five tiers of cast-iron balconies rising to a skylight, is among the most photographed interiors in the state and holds over 300,000 volumes. The Maryland Center for History and Culture preserves Francis Scott Key’s original manuscript of the Star-Spangled Banner. The flagship Central Branch of the Enoch Pratt Free Library, one of the oldest free public library systems in the country, anchors the neighborhood’s western edge, and the Eubie Blake National Jazz Institute and Cultural Center documents Baltimore’s jazz heritage nearby.
Mount Vernon Place is the neighborhood’s green heart — four formal landscaped squares with fountains, sculpture, and mature trees, restored in recent years and used year-round for concerts, markets, and community gatherings. It is one of the most distinctive public spaces in any American city, and for residents it functions as a front lawn. Beyond the squares, the Inner Harbor promenade is roughly ten blocks south on foot, Druid Hill Park and its reservoir loop sit a short trip northwest, and the Jones Falls Trail connects north from nearby Penn Station. The neighborhood’s flat, tightly gridded streets and high walkability make daily errands and running routes easy without a car.
Mount Vernon is Baltimore’s performing arts center. North Charles Street carries what is probably the most internationally varied restaurant corridor in Baltimore, with long-standing independent kitchens spanning a wide range of cuisines packed into a handful of walkable blocks. Mount Vernon Marketplace brings a food hall of independent vendors under one roof, and the surrounding streets hold cafes, bakeries, wine shops, and bars occupying ground floors of nineteenth-century buildings. Antique Row on North Howard Street has traded in furniture, art, and curiosities for well over a century. For groceries and larger-format retail, residents have options within the neighborhood and a short trip to Harbor East or the Baltimore Farmers’ Market and Bazaar, which runs under the JFX on Sunday mornings.
