Federal Hill is among Baltimore’s most historically significant neighborhoods, protected today as a locally designated historic district and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The hill was first recorded by Captain John Smith in 1608 and took its present name from an enormous 1788 procession celebrating Maryland’s ratification of the U.S. Constitution. A merchant signal station opened at the summit in the 1790s, allowing observers to spot incoming ships well before they reached the harbor. A battery was placed on the hill during the War of 1812, and in May 1861 Union troops under General Benjamin Butler fortified the summit and trained artillery on the city for the remainder of the Civil War. The city acquired the hill in 1880, and replica cannons and monuments mark those chapters today.
Federal Hill sits at the center of Baltimore’s harbor museum district. The American Visionary Art Museum, at the foot of the hill on Key Highway, is the nation’s primary museum of self-taught and outsider art and is a landmark in its own right.
