Things to Do in Harrisburg, Pa

The Pennsylvania State Capitol in Harrisburg, PA

As spring quickly approaches, and we start to get a taste of warmer weather, most people find themselves longing to be outdoors. It’s finally time to say “goodbye’ to winter and to once again welcome those longer days. There’s something about having those extra hours of sunlight, that make us want to get out of the house, take a day trip, or even just check out local attractions. In this blog post, we’re going to discuss our top six things to do in Harrisburg, Pa. We’ll touch base on family-friendly fun, as well as some things for the adults to enjoy!

#1- Pennsylvania State Capitol

The Pennsylvania State Capitol is number one on our list because you obviously can’t visit Harrisburg without checking out this beautiful building. Teddy Roosevelt declared this building the “handsomest building I ever saw”, and we can see why! The architecture and stained glass are stunning to see in person. There are options to take a self-guided tour, which visitors do recommend.

#2- Hersheypark

While it’s not technically in Harrisburg, it’s about 15 miles east, which is close enough to make out the list! Hersheypark is a family theme park, which offers a ton of options for literally everyone in the family! There are roller coasters for the thrill-seeker, rides for the little ones, a water park, and even a zoo! Our favorite attraction of all is Hershey’s Chocolate World. Here, you can enjoy a tour of the chocolate factory and create your own candy bar!

#3- SpringGate Vineyard

The next attraction on our list is for all of the wine lovers out there! SpringGate Vineyard is located at the juncture of Interstate 81 and 83 and is kind of perfect. The vineyard offers traditional wine tasting rooms, winery patios, and the largest beer garden in central Pennsylvania! SpringGate also partners with many local restaurants/caterers, and food trucks, bringing you many delicious food options to enjoy while on site. Finally, we have to mention the Happy Hour schedule for 2020. You can enjoy a wine slushy Happy Hour on Wednesdays and Thursdays, between 6-9:30 pm, Sangria Happy Hour at the Brewery on Thursdays from 5:30-9:30 pm, and a Wine Slushy Happy Hour on Sundays from 1-5 pm.

#4- Wildwood Nature Park

Wildwood Nature Park is tucked away in the rolling hills of central Pennsylvania, located on the edge of Harrisburg. Guests of the park are welcomed to explore the Nature Center, walk the trails and boardwalks, ride your bike, pack a lunch, and so much more! The Nature Center is opened Tuesday-Sunday, 10 am-4 pm, with the trail opened daily from dusk-dawn. The park also offers plenty of family-friendly events that can be found on the Wildwood Nature Park website.

#5- Pride of the Susquehanna Riverboat Cruise

As one of the only six remaining “authentic” paddlewheel riverboats in the United States, we feel this is deserving of the number five spot. This 120 passenger boat (can vary depending on the cruise type), was built 32 years ago, as a community service project for the Harrisburg Area Riverboat Society. The Pride hosts many events and is currently used for weddings, parties, business functions, and a variety of dinner themed cruises. If you’re looking for something a little more laid back, you can check out the 45 Minute Sightseeing Tour. The tour is perfect for family and friends, with tickets starting at $11 for adults and $6 for children. Tickets can be reserved online or purchased right on the island by the dock.

#6- Harrisburg Pedal Tours

The final spot on our list of things to do in Harrisburg goes to Harrisburg Pedal Tours. What better way to experience beautiful weather than going out with your friends on a pedal-powered trolley to check out the sights around town! The professional and trained drivers work hard to ensure your experience is not only safe, but unforgettable. Guests are encouraged to bring their own food and drinks on the tour and have the ability to play their own music on the provided speakers.
