At Bay Management Group, our team is the cornerstone of our success, and we love to shine a light on the dedicated individuals who make us great. This month, we’re thrilled to introduce you to Jill Feder, the remarkable Content Editor for our corporate marketing department. Jill’s keen eye for detail and commitment to supporting her team make her an invaluable asset to our company.
Meet Jill Feder, Marketing Content Editor for BMG
Jill has been a vital part of the BMG team for a little over a year. She began her journey with us as an SEO Content Writer of top-performing articles such as “Free Investing Courses from MIT,” “How to Write a Lease Termination Letter,” and “The 4 Best Hard Money Calculators You Can Find Online.” Then, late last year, she started her current role as Marketing Content Editor.
Jill graduated magna cum laude from Wheaton College. She has a diverse professional background of various writing and advocacy roles, such as being a content writer for Accessibility.com and a CDC Health Assessment Fellow for Special Olympics USA. Her experiences bring a unique perspective to the world of property management; an industry she’s been a part of since joining BMG.
A Day in the Life of Jill
Jill’s day typically kicks off around 10 AM, and she admits she can’t start without her Diet Coke! As a Content Editor, her primary responsibilities include optimizing her writers’ work for SEO and property management best practices. She also provides continual feedback and support to her team.
When asked about her favorite part of the job, Jill says her favorite part is being her writers’ personal cheerleader. Jill explains that as a content editor, she’s keenly aware of the authority she holds over her writers and that this power is a precarious, delicate thing. If she wields it in the wrong way, she believes it could make others feel silenced, fearful, and intimidated. Therefore, she aims to do the opposite: uplift her writers and make them feel as psychologically safe, supported, and successful as possible. She finds incomparable satisfaction in being able to treat others the way she would like to be treated, and in being the difference she wants to see in the world.
Jill also shared something that surprised her while working in this industry: Fair Housing Laws. She explained that in the past, she was always taught that the definitive way to treat protected classes, like people with disabilities, with respect was to actively celebrate their differences. However, Fair Housing Laws reframe equality with a whole different lens: that treating them with respect (and following the law!) means treating them the same way you would treat anyone else. Both philosophies aim for the same goal — to respect people with disabilities – just in different ways. Converting her brain to this new concept was a huge shift in thinking for her.
One thing Jill wishes more people knew about her job is that it’s not just about intellectual labor; she states it’s about emotional labor, too. She emphasizes that everyone you meet has different mindsets, values, priorities, and goals, and it’s important to meet them halfway, where they are, not just where you are.
Why Jill Loves BMG
When considering what sets Bay Management Group apart, Jill points to the conscientiousness of her marketing team. She says that everyone who works there has an incredible work ethic and approaches their work with an earnest, constant drive to improve. She sees them as some of the core pillars that keep the company going.
Jill’s Advice for Industry Newcomers
For those considering the property management field, or those already in the industry, Jill has some advice. Mainly, to immerse yourself in the culture of the industry. Before working at BMG, she worked primarily in the non-profit sector. The sector values emotion, vulnerability, sensitivity, and other abstract values. The property management industry culture respects these values, of course. That said, what it really emphasizes are more concrete values, like efficiency, order, structure, and logic. This seemed like a foreign language to her, but she wanted to learn and grow, so she adapted. As such, newcomers should strive to be culturally competent in a way that also feels authentic to who they are.
Getting to Know Jill Outside of the Office
When she’s not immersed in editing and supporting her team, Jill has a fascinating hobby: learning about Myers-Briggs personality theory. She proudly identifies as an INFP. Being one of the rarest personality types, she shares it with figures like Princess Diana, William Shakespeare, and Audrey Hepburn. This interest, she says, has helped her understand both herself and others more deeply.
If Jill could meet anyone, living or dead, Jill says she would choose Mariska Hargitay. She admires Hargitay for her iconic role as Olivia Benson on Law & Order: SVU and her active involvement in advocacy work. She views her as a true hero.
For the best book she’s ever read, Jill recommends Jennette McCurdy’s memoir, I’m Glad My Mom Died. Beyond the scandalous title, McCurdy shares a harrowing narrative of how her mother forced her into the dark underbelly of Hollywood as a child actress. She considers McCurdy a survivor and admires her strength and resilience very much. As for one thing she’d dis-invent, she says it would be the “Friends” finale. She believes Rachel shouldn’t have gotten off that plane!
Three words Jill uses to describe herself are empathetic, principled, and an out-of-the-box thinker.
