Meet Wynn Geis, Director of Business Development

wynn-geis

Wynn brings an extensive and varied background to his role at Bay Property Management Group. While attending Stevenson University, where he studied Business Administration and Entrepreneurship, Wynn was a caddy and worked for outdoor operations at Caves Valley Golf Club. Additionally, he interned at MFI Realty where he learned about the commercial property management sector. During this time, he also had a part-time role at JHL auctioneers, assisting with the preparations for real estate auctions. Now, he is a licensed real estate agent in the state of Virginia!

What Does Wynn Enjoy Most About Working in Northern Virginia?

Wynn enjoys the energy and excitement of being just outside our nation’s capital and living in Arlington, Virginia. He loves that he is able to meet people from all walks of life and experience many different cultures. Wynn adds, “You can try some of the best tasting, and truly authentic dishes from just about every major country.” Additionally, he has been enjoying day trips into DC to sightsee on off days. He even finds driving to and from work appointments interesting with all of the amazing architectural sights.

A Day in the Life of Wynn Geis, Director of Business Development

Being a Director of Business Development, Wynn is responsible for bringing on all new properties for the company. He promotes our management services to property owners, and assists in gathering all the important information to set owners up for success.

A typical workday for Wynn starts by responding to emails that have come in overnight. Then, he follows up with potential owners that are considering management services and creates a game plan for the day in order to prioritize his tasks.

On a busy day, Wynn will make 3 to 4 house call appointments, which include rent assessments, initial inspections, and marketing photos. Then the end of each day is spent doing administrative tasks as well as going through any emails he may have missed. According to Wynn, “My phone and email tend to be most active between 4:30-6:00 pm, so I always try to block off this time. Thus, allowing me time to respond to inquiries promptly.”

When asked what his favorite part of his job was, Wynn responded:

“I love the spontaneity of the job and not knowing what the day will bring. Each property is different and thus a new challenge. You must be quick on your feet and address a wide range of owners. One minute I will be working with a large real estate investor on signing up their 14-unit multifamily building and the next with a husband and wife interested in renting their home of 20 years because they are taking off to Florida for retirement. This makes it near impossible to fall into a mundane autopilot that many businesspeople experience.”

Something that surprised Wynn about property management in Northern Virginia was how independent you can be in this industry. He says that oftentimes you feel like you are your own small business within a larger business.

Why Wynn Loves Bay Property Management Group

According to Wynn, what sets Bay Property Management Group apart is that you are not micromanaged. Bay Management Group is truly a collective team and every employee has a direct line to the top of management. Thus, allowing everyone to make their opinions heard.

Wynn states, “My first day of work as a leasing agent at BMG I sat down with the company President of our Laurel Branch: Nick Stone, and he made it clear that he has an open-door policy. If I have a critique or issue, I can come directly to him to discuss how it can be resolved. This has remained true throughout my time with the company.”

His best piece of advice for those considering this field is to be prepared to work outside of normal business hours. Real estate is a 24/7 business and normal business hours do not apply. The typical client he deals with on a day-to-day basis is not a real estate investor. Instead, they are a hard-working homeowner. This means they may be preoccupied with their own 9-5 job during the weekdays. Thus, only having time to address their rental home needs outside of these hours.

Getting to Know Wynn Outside of the Office

  • When you’re not in the office, what do you like to do? I love golfing! If the weather is nice and I am off work then you will likely find me at a golf course. I will often get together with past golf teammates and play fun, but competitive 18 hole matches. During weekday evenings I will either be playing video games with a close group of friends or browsing movies, TV series and sports for something interesting to watch. If I am on vacation and there is a body of water around then I will likely be fishing.
  • Tell us something off your bucket list. I want to do a car ride from the east coast to the west coast. Stopping along the way for sightseeing.
  • If you could meet anyone, living or dead, who would you want to meet and why?I would want to meet Tiger Woods as I have idolized him ever since I was a little kid. Some of my earliest memories are sitting on the couch with my dad and watching him dominate.
  • What is the best book you have ever read? The Big Miss: My Years Coaching Tiger Woods By Hank Haney.
  • If you could dis-invent one thing, what would it be?Social Media. I try not to use social media a lot in my personal life. I think that it is very harmful to people’s mental health.
  • What are three words to describe yourself?Determined, Calm, and Friendly
