Employee Spotlight: Sean Donohue, Director of Operations of BMG Laurel

Therefore, we are initiating our Employee Spotlight to help you get to know more about our talented employees, and how their unique backgrounds and expertise help us stay a “cut above the rest.” Today, we are proud to introduce Sean Donohue, Director of Operations at our Laurel office. Read on to discover all about Sean, his professional background, and what he enjoys most about working here at Bay Property Management Group.

Sean Donohue, Director of Operations for BMG Laurel

Sean is the Director of Operations for our Laurel office. He graduated from the University of Maryland-College Park in 2018 with a BA concentrated in Architecture and Real Estate Development. After working various positions in sales and retail during college, Sean began his career with BMG as a leasing agent six years ago. In that time, he continuously excelled in customer relations and showed a commitment to growing the business.

As Director of Operations, Sean oversees everyone and everything that happens in our Laurel branch. This includes running audits and reports to ensure our performance is the best it can be, meeting with his managers to check how their teams are doing, working on projects and new initiatives, and doing research in his free time to brainstorm ways they can improve as a team and as an office. It’s all about doing what he can to make life easier and more efficient for his team!

A Day in the Life of Sean Donohue

In an average day, he’s in his office, running reports and meeting with team members, owners, or vendors. He always tries his best to complete his daily “to-do” list as quickly and efficiently as possible. Then, he works ahead on any other tasks and projects for the week and future weeks to come. He always tries to keep himself busy and not have idle time fill his workday, as keeping busy means the day goes by that much quicker!

When asked what his favorite part of the job was, Sean responded:

“My favorite part of my job is the people aspect of it. At its core, property management is a customer service business. I greatly enjoy getting to know everyone on my team better, working with them and owners/tenants to help solve problems.”

Why Sean Loves Bay Property Management Group

To Sean, what sets BMG apart are its leadership and systems. He feels they have made the growth we’ve been undergoing in the recent years possible.

Sean observed that our structure, with dedicated, full-service offices in all of our served areas, is what lets us provide great services to both our property owners and tenants. He likened it to how people wouldn’t buy a car without an engine or wheels. In the same vein, they wouldn’t want a property manager who can’t offer the complete property management package.

That’s why at BMG, we have systems like in-house technicians, a great vendor network, leasing agents, a great property management software, in-house accounting and recruiting, and a great leadership team to bring it all together. In Sean’s opinion, this difference is why we are where we are. Because we have that, he says, the sky is the limit.

Sean’s best piece of advice for industry newcomers is that they must stay organized to succeed. If they’re not, they must do everything they can to become organized because they’ll struggle without it. There’s so much information and tasks that we come across on a daily basis, and you have to know how to keep yourself organized through it all to perform effectively and efficiently enough to manage. It can be done!

Getting to Know Sean Outside of the Office

When you’re not in the office, what do you like to do?

  • I love to lift weights and play sports, get together to catch up with friends and family, travel the world to explore new places and cultures, and spend time going on adventures with my 4-year-old golden retriever, Koda. 

Name something off your bucket list.

  • Visit Japan and Egypt. 

If you could meet anyone, living or dead, who would you want to meet and why?

  • Leonardo da Vinci. His ideas were so far ahead of his time!

What is the best book you’ve ever read?

  • Radical Candor by Kim Scott. It provides some great tools for leadership and management!

If you could dis-invent one thing, what would it be?

  • Smart phones. They do so much to make our lives easier, but at the same time, I feel they do much to divide us and take away from quality time we could spend with others

Which three words would you use to describe yourself?

  • Hardworking, organized, caring
