Employee Spotlight: Amaya Lopez, Corporate Receptionist at BMG

At Bay Property Management Group, our mission is to provide exceptional property management services while fostering an environment of growth and success for our team members. In this month’s Employee Spotlight, we’re thrilled to introduce Amaya Lopez, our Corporate Receptionist in our Baltimore office. Amaya brings deep operational expertise and strong leadership to our team, driving growth and ensuring the Baltimore office runs smoothly and efficiently.

A Career Path Led by Destiny

Amaya has worked in many fields throughout her life. The majority of them have been client-facing, which is truly her strong suit. After a brief stint in a call center left her feeling burnt out, a receptionist opportunity at our property management company in Baltimore fell into her lap at just the right time. Luckily, it turned out to be the perfect fit. It allowed her to use her people skills and diverse background in ways she never could have expected.

Working remotely as the corporate receptionist, Amaya is the voice of the company, handling our phone system and connecting people with the right departments. As you can imagine, this position can be very demanding, but she handles it with grace.

What she loves most about her job is the variety. She occasionally assists various departments beyond her main responsibilities, and after trying so many different paths, she’s discovered that this role lets her thrive—connecting with people every day while using her diverse skill set in meaningful ways.

“The work environment and people at BMG are amazing, and this has been the healthiest, most rewarding job I’ve ever had. I genuinely love coming to work–well, logging in from home.”

What drew Amaya to Bay Property Management Group?

Amaya joined the BMG team in May 2021 through a staffing agency, and by February 2022, she became a direct hire—an exciting milestone for her.

Initially, she was drawn to the opportunity itself. After feeling burnt out from her previous role, she was looking for something that would allow her to use her people skills in a healthier work environment.

What she never expected, though, was how much she’d love working with BMG. Within the first nine months, she experienced firsthand how supportive and collaborative the BMG team truly is.

“The company values its employees, fosters genuine connections, and creates an environment where people actually want to contribute and grow.”

Becoming a direct hire wasn’t just a job transition for Amaya; it was joining a workplace family that she’s proud to be a part of. Nearly four years later, according to Amaya, that initial draw she had has only grown stronger.

Her Professional Journey Before BMG

Amaya’s professional journey has been quite diverse. She’s a non-practicing attorney and worked as a certified expert translator and interpreter for five years—she even ran her own translating firm during that time. She’s also worked as a legal assistant, in call centers, and in various client-facing roles.

She didn’t necessarily set out with the rental industry in mind, and what prepared her for this role wasn’t industry-specific knowledge, but rather a combination of her previous experiences. Her legal background helps when supporting recruiting with documentation, while her translation and interpretation work taught her how to communicate clearly and bridge gaps between people. Years in customer service also taught her patience, problem-solving, and how to stay calm when things get hectic.

“I think what really prepared me was learning to wear many hats and adapt to different situations–skills that serve me well in a role where every day brings something different.”

Although the rental industry was new to her when she first started at BMG, her diverse background provided a strong foundation for learning quickly and contributing in unexpected ways.

A Typical Day at BMG for Amaya

Amaya works remotely as our corporate receptionist at BMG, and her main responsibility is managing our phone system. She answers incoming calls, routes them to the appropriate departments, and ensures everyone who reaches out gets connected to the right person.

A typical day involves handling a steady flow of calls from potential tenants, current tenants, vendors, owners, and plenty of telemarketers. She acts as a filter so our teams aren’t bombarded with constant calls and can focus on their work. She also troubleshoots phone system issues and helps colleagues navigate any related questions.

Throughout her time at BMG, Amaya’s core responsibilities have remained fairly steady. However, her role has expanded in ways she truly enjoys. She assists the recruiting department with tasks that align with her legal experience and transcription skills. With that, she also contributes to special projects across leasing and IT, and has become the go-to expert for our phone system.

Balancing different responsibilities helps keep work interesting, but her main focus remains the same—being a reliable first point of contact for everyone who reaches out to BMG Baltimore.

What’s Most Satisfying About the Job?

When asked what gives Amaya the most satisfaction or keeps her motivated on tough days, she said:

“Honestly, it’s the people. Knowing that I’m helping someone, whether that’s a potential tenant trying to find a home, a current resident who needs assistance, or a team member who needs support, gives me so much satisfaction. Even on the toughest days when the phones are ringing nonstop, or I’m dealing with difficult situations, I remind myself that I’m making a difference by being that reliable voice on the other end of the line.”

What really keeps her motivated is the supportive team around her. The work environment at BMG is one where colleagues genuinely care about each other, and on challenging days, that sense of community keeps her going.

At the end of the day, she loves knowing she made someone’s day a little easier or helped keep things running smoothly for the BMG team—and that’s what keeps her engaged and excited to log in every day.

What Makes BMG’s Workplace Unique?

For Amaya, what makes BMG unique is the people, hands down. She’s worked in many different environments throughout her career. However, she says BMG has the healthiest and most positive workplace she’s experienced.

What truly sets BMG apart, she says, is that it’s not just talk. The company truly walks the walk when it comes to caring about employee well-being and creating a collaborative atmosphere.

“People here want to help each other succeed, and there’s a real sense of community even though many of us work remotely. Leadership is approachable, colleagues are genuinely kind, and there’s an understanding that we’re all working toward the same goals together.”

She also appreciates that BMG recognizes and utilizes people’s diverse skill sets. Being able to contribute beyond her core responsibilities shows that the company values what each person brings to the table, making it a place where you can grow, learn, and feel appreciated for your contributions.

Skills that Help You Succeed in Property Management

For Amaya, communication is huge. It’s important to listen carefully, speak clearly, and know how to connect people with the right resources. In the rental industry, you’re constantly interacting with people who have different needs, so being able to adapt your communication style is essential.

“Patience and problem-solving go hand in hand. Things don’t always go smoothly, and you have to stay calm under pressure while figuring out solutions. Whether it’s a frustrated tenant, a complex issue, or just a hectic day, keeping your composure makes all the difference.”

She also emphasizes that adaptability is critical. The rental industry moves fast, priorities shift, and you have to be comfortable wearing multiple hats. Being willing to learn and ask questions when you don’t know something is just as important as having all the answers.

Finally, she believes having a genuine desire to help people matters. At the end of the day, we’re in the business of helping people find and maintain their homes. That said, if you’re focused on making someone’s day easier or solving their problem, that mindset will carry you far.

What Impact Do You Hope to Make Here?

Amaya hopes to continue being a reliable, steady presence that people can count on. Whether it’s a team member who needs help with the phone system, a potential tenant calling for the first time, or a current resident with a concern, she wants to be known as someone who consistently gets people where they need to go.

Long-term, she’d love to keep contributing to the supportive culture that makes BMG so special. She wants to help others feel welcome and valued—whether through a friendly voice on the phone or by stepping in to support colleagues when they need an extra hand.

She also hopes to continue growing in ways that benefit the company.

“My role has already evolved since I started, and I’m excited to see where else I can contribute as BMG continues to grow.”

Ultimately, she wants to look back years from now and know she played a role in keeping things running smoothly and helping make BMG a great place to work and do business with.

Getting to Know Amaya Outside the Office

We love getting to know the people behind the work. So, we asked Amaya a series of questions that tell a little more about her personal life!

Do you have a hidden talent or hobby you enjoy outside of work?

Amaya has several hobbies she enjoys outside of work! She loves playing music, including playing the guitar. She’s also an avid reader and audiobook listener, mostly of crime novels. With that, she enjoys doing handyman projects around the house and just learning new things in general.

“I often do deep dives into psychology, listening to experts and analyzing situations where I can apply the concepts. I find it fascinating how understanding human behavior can give you perspective on so many different aspects of life.”

Above all, one of her favorite things is giving herself permission to rest. She values having a safe space where you can just be, without any pressure or expectations. Balance is key, and she tries to enjoy a little bit of everything.

Tell us something off your bucket list and what it means to you.

Amaya’s not much of a bucket list person. According to her, her biggest wishes have already come true.

“I married the love of my life, my best friend, and we’re looking forward to creating our life together, building our home, and being happy.”

For her, it’s not really about checking off certain achievements or traveling to crazy places. Instead, it’s about having a happy, fulfilling life with the people she loves most. She says,

“Sometimes, we get so focused on the big, flashy goals that we forget the most meaningful things are often the simple, everyday moments.”

What matters most to her is a life filled with contentment, growth, and the people who make it all worthwhile.

If you could meet anyone, living or dead, who would it be and why?

“I think I’d want to meet Saint Francis of Assisi. He’s someone who truly understood what it means to live a simple but fulfilling life. He came from wealth but chose a different path, finding joy in nature, community, and serving others.”

What fascinates Amaya about him is that he seemed to have such clarity about what really mattered to him. He never lost sight of who he was at his core. She’d love to ask him how he found that kind of clarity and stayed true to it. There’s something powerful about knowing yourself well enough to build a life that actually aligns with your values, whatever those may be.

If you could be known for one thing, what would you want it to be?

Amaya wants to be known as someone who was genuinely kind and reliable. Someone people could count on, whether that was for a friendly voice when they needed help, a steady presence during stressful times, or just someone who made their day a little easier.

“I’m a recovering people-pleaser, and I’ve recently worked on being there for myself, too. I think I’m finding a balance between being the kind person I genuinely am and also being that kind person to myself, setting boundaries with love.”

Amaya knows that what matters most is how you make people feel and whether you show up, both for others and for yourself, when it counts. She wants to be remembered as someone who cared, listened, and tried to make a positive impact wherever she could.
